Ridin’ with the wind - again

Growing up in the small Delta community of Shelby, one of our great pastimes was riding motorcycles all over town. It didn’t matter if you were eight or 18, the police could have cared less. Those experiences helped launch my high school sport, motocross racing, and I raced from the sixth grade until my first year at Ole Miss. Thankfully, I never got hurt.

When my sons were small, they often asked, “Daddy, you owned motorcycles, why don’t you let us have some?”

“Because I don’t want you all to get killed,” I would sternly reply.

However, that “pushing” became more constant as the years passed, and when first son Thomas was ten and second son, Jordan was eight, my wife, Cindy and I decided to get them two small motorcycles they could ride over in our hunting club located on the Mississippi River. In order to teach them to ride and not let them just wander all over the club on their own, I bought a trail bike as well. Until then, I had not ridden a motorcycle in 22 years. We three Coopwood boys cooked hotdogs at lunch and rode motorcycles on Saturday afternoons for many years when my sons were small. They are now 18 and 16.

As my boys got older, riding motorcycles on the weekends just wasn’t as exciting as it once was. However, I still wanted to ride, but I wasn’t thrilled about riding on dirt roads by myself in our hunting club. Two years ago, lifelong friend, Keith Tarver at Greenville Motor Sports overheard me talking about this and urged me to get a “street” bike, noting that I could keep it at my home and ride every day –– unlike riding the dirt bikes only on the weekends because my home is 30 miles away from our cabin where our dirt bikes are kept.

Not long after his comment, I purchased my first street bike and was hooked. I now have three. There is something therapeutic about jumping on a motorcycle at the end of a long day and riding around the county. While that has been a ton of fun and I still enjoy it, I find now I want to ride beyond the Delta’s borders where I live.

Toward that end, my first long distance motorcycle journey took place last June when I rode the Natchez Trace, beginning in Nashville and stopping in Tupelo that afternoon because the temp was 103 degrees. I took a detour to Oxford and cooled off at the Wendy’s on Jackson Avenue. After coming to my senses from the heat, I decided to call it day. A temperature of 103 is just not an ideal ridding situation.

A few weeks ago, I drove over to Tupelo, got on the exact spot where I had ended my ride a few months earlier, and completed that Natchez Trace ride, leaving Tupelo at 12:40 p.m., and arriving in Natchez at 6:20 p.m., about 275 miles. Regardless as to whether or not you ride a motorcycle, traveling down the Natchez Trace (on or in anything) is an incredible experience.

The Trace is one of American’s greatest rides. Recorded accounts of settlers using the Trace begin in 1742. Its historical path was created and used by the American Indians long before this date. The secretary of Spanish explorer, Hernando DeSoto, even mentions the Trace in the notes he kept from DeSoto’s travels across the Mid-South.

There is much history to see on the Trace, ranging from Indian mounds, to museums, to 1700 and 1800 era Inns, to Civil War sites, to the wildlife, the rivers and creeks, the many lookout points, to the variety of the species of trees. It is endless. And, I’m ashamed to admit that growing up in the Delta, I had never seen the Natchez Trace until last June 3. After making this statement to several Delta friends, I was surprised to discover they also had not set foot on the Trace. Sometimes we just don’t realize what we have in our own backyard here in Mississippi.

Riding a motorcycle is a terrific sport. Of course, you have to respect it and be careful. However, the thrill is indescribable.

Scott is the publisher and owner of Delta Magazine, one of the South’s leading lifestyle publications (deltamagazine.com); the Delta Business Journal, (deltabusinessjournal.com) the first business publication in the Mississippi Delta; and Cleveland’s weekly newspaper, The Cleveland Current (theclevelandcurrent.com). Scott’s company also publishes two weekly e-newsletters. Coopwood publishing concerns now reach 250,000 people. Scott is also a 1984 graduate of the University of Mississippi. Sharyn Alfonsi Named Commencement Speaker for Journalism School

Alumna lands dream job 60 Minutes

The first few months of 2013 seem to be pretty packed in terms of career highlights for veteran news correspondent Sharyn Alfonsi.

So far, the 1994 University of Mississippi graduate has landed her dream job as a contributor for Showtime’s “60 Minutes Sports” and was chosen to deliver the keynote address at the 2013 graduation ceremony of the Meek School of Journalism and New Media, slated for May 11.

While Alfonsi said she is honored to return this spring to Ole Miss, she wonders if it’s a mistake.

“I honestly haven’t gotten over the shock of the request. I still think a mistake has been made,” Alfonsi said with a laugh. “But I will admit that I am beyond honored, and even thrilled, that my alma mater wants me to come back as a guest speaker.”

Alfonsi is the school’s third commencement speaker, following in the footsteps of 2012 speaker Andy Lack, former NBC News president and CEO of Bloomberg’s multimedia group.

The university’s journalism department became the Meek School of Journalism and New Media in 2009, thanks to a $5.3 million gift from Ole Miss alumni Ed and Becky Meek. Dan Rather, former CBS News anchor and “60 Minutes” correspondent, was the speaker for the inaugural graduation ceremony in 2011.

“There is a buzz about Sharyn among media elite,” said Will Norton Jr., dean of the school. “And it is such a privilege to welcome back one of our own who is such a great reporter and such a well-respected journalist.”

Alfonsi began her journalism career as an Ole Miss student in 1990. Back then, the self-proclaimed journalism nerd said she spent every hour of her day with NewsWatch, a live, student-run broadcast.

“I worked every job, including teleprompter, anchoring, reporting, camera operation and more,” she said. “I spent more time at the Student Media Center than at my sorority house. But once I graduated, I knew I was ready for my trade. I knew how to use the equipment and was more than ready for my first paying job in Fort Smith, Ark.”

Alfonsi credits two Ole Miss professors for her success: Ralph Braseth and the late Jim Pratt.

In fact, when Alfonsi landed her first job at KHBS/KHOG, an ABC-affiliated station in Fort Smith, Pratt sent a congratulatory note.

“If I had to pick one word to describe Dr. Pratt, that word would be encouraging,” she said. “He made a point of pushing us to try harder, to work harder. It was Dr. Pratt who encouraged me to take advantage of everything the then-Department of Journalism had to offer. In fact, he was the one who gave me my first tour of the campus and of the NewsWatch broadcast studio. I still couldn’t believe students were running the place, I was sold.”

The one word Alfonsi used to describe Braseth was “hard-hitting.”

“Ralph Braseth kicked my butt in shape. He was tough, but he also had this cheerleading spirit,” Alfonsi said. “He was one of my favorite teachers ever because he forced us to use all the tools of this trade. He’s why I graduated from Ole Miss knowing how to work a camera and how to do production. Ralph gave us a working knowledge of the broadcasting world. He’s the reason I got my first job and he’s not shy about reminding me of that!”

Braseth, who was a member of the Ole Miss journalism faculty for 18 years before joining the School of Communications at Loyola University in Chicago in 2009, said it would take more than one word to accurately describe Alfonsi.

“Sharyn was one of my first students at Ole Miss,” he said. “She lived in the Student Media Center and was able to handle every position at the TV station. It’s hard to imagine where people will go when they walk away from Ole Miss with a journalism degree, but I knew that for at least a few years, Sharyn would be a journalist.

“She is tenacious and she gives Ole Miss students the knowledge they can go toe-to-toe with anyone, anywhere, anytime. From an Ole Miss sophomore with big beauty queen hair to one of finest reporters I’ve known, it’s been great fun watching her go.”

After a one-year stint at KHOG, Alfonsi quickly moved up to work as a general assignment reporter for WVEC-TV in Norfolk, Va. (1995-97), where she traveled extensively with the military, and as a reporter for KIRO-TV, the CBS affiliate in Seattle (1998-2000), where she covered the World Trade Organization riots.

She was an anchor for CBS affiliate WBZ-TV in Boston, where she covered the Catholic Church sex-abuse scandal and the Michael Skakel trial, before joining the parent network in New York in 2003. Alfonsi left CBS to join ABC News in 2008.

The move to Showtime in February is something of a homecoming for Alfonsi, who was a correspondent and anchor for CBS News for five years. CBS News’ “60 Minutes” co-produces “60 Minutes Sports,” a sports newsmagazine that airs on sister network Showtime. At “60 Minutes Sports,” Alfonsi will do more in-depth reporting.

“This is my dream job,” she said. “It’s the one I’ve always wanted. It’s all so new to me. When I saw my name on the storyboard, I had to pinch myself. I grew up with CBS and have always loved its programs. Now I’m back. It’s like coming home and if this is a dream, don’t wake me up.”

Alfonsi and her husband, Matthew Eby, are the parents of two children, a 3-year old son, Whatt, and a daughter, Flynn, 1.

End of All Music Turns One

Birthday-Poster-by-Len-Clark-610x843 Oxford’s vinyl record shop celebrates first birthday, at Lamar Lounge

For a few years, after the closing of Hot Dog Records and Uncle Buck’s before it, Oxford was a desert as far as music in the recorded form was concerned. You either sucked invisible mp3s through the magical tubes of the interwebs, or you bought a CD from Sam Walton. Neither elicited the urgency that got you into music in the first place.

And then a year ago the ironically named End of All Music opened on North Lamar, purveying new and use vinyl, CDs, and more. Warmth and soul were restored to the cosmos. Since then, the shop’s owners also opened Lamar Lounge, which has grown to be a favorite watering hole and nosh station, with live music as well. Fittingly, it’s the site of End of All Music’s first birthday party, this Friday, March 1, with live music by Plume, Cowboy Killers, Art, Rosenbaum, Nuh-uh, Child Star, Youth Flag, a solo set by Sean Kirkpatrick of Colour Revolt, and cuts by DJ Rolex Luthor.

The cover is $5, with some of the cash going to the bands and some of it going to Norton Records, a reissue label that lost most of its vinyl stock to super-storm Sandy. Read more about Norton here: http:// www.nortonrecords.com/home.php

Len Clark designed a super-limited, screen-printed poster (pictured) to commemorate the event. They’ll be for sale at the show.

Oh, and End of All Music promise some special things going on at the record store during the day. The birthday party at Lamar Lounge jumps off around 8 p.m.

Cultural Cornerstone at Ole Miss

Homage to William FaulknerThis limited edition print, “Homage To William Faulkner #1″ was created by Professor John Winter in 1973 as former Ole Miss Chancellor Porter L. Fortune, Jr., announced the formation of The Cultural Center. The Cultural Center today incorporates the University Museums; Rowan Oak, home of William Faulkner; Stark Young Home; Memory House, the former residence of John Faulkner, now housing the University Foundation, the Faulkner Trail and Woods, and the The Gertrude Ford Performing Arts Center. The concept of the Cultural Center was developed by four faculty and staff members — Dr. Gerald Walton, the late Dr. Bruce Huneycutt, Dr. Pete Bruening, Dr. Frank Anderson and Ed Meek — who presented the idea to Chancellor Fortune, who made it the cornerstone of his administration.

Activist LeeAnn Rasmussen is fighting to get persons with disabilities protected under hate crime laws in Mississippi

By Pete Raid

The attack on a South Mississippi teen with cerebral palsy has one civil rights activist pushing for a change in Mississippi’s hate crimes statute.

Austin Stokes, a 14-year-old student, is also legally blind and has limited use of the left side of his body. He attended George County High School in south Mississippi.

Stokes says that on October 18, a fellow student called him a “retard” and then attacked. The student was later expelled and charged with simple assault. Because the attacker is a juvenile, authorities are not releasing his name or his sentence, but Stokes has now moved to a different school.

Lori Ann Dees, Austin’s mother, was outraged when she went to the school to find Austin in a wheelchair with his only good eye swollen shut, a chipped tooth, a swollen lip and saw him bleeding from his face. She was then shocked to find out that persons with disabilities are not protected under the state’s hate crimes statute.

“I feared the need for the change, but wasn’t sure what I could offer to help make the change,” said Dees.

In several states, including Louisiana and Alabama, the attack could be considered a hate crime, but not in Mississippi. Now, activist LeeAnn Rasmussen is trying to change that.

Rasmussen, who has a long history of advocating for civil rights and military veterans, saw Austin’s story on Facebook and knew she had to do something.

“I want Mississippi to be a social justice state,” says Rasmussen.

Rasmussen started Mississippi Citizens for Austin’s Law to try to get persons with disabilities added to the Mississippi hate crimes statute. This addendum would allow for tougher sentences for crimes motivated by hate against Mississippi’s disabled population.

“I think that the penalty enhancement will act as a deterrent to somebody who would be motivated to act out of hatred,” Rasmussen said.

Sammy Kim, who works for a regional program that serves individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, personally believes that changing the law to help protect those with disabilities might not help in every case.

“It’s hard to determine why people do the things they do,” says Kim, but he agrees that the law is necessary. “If we know that hate was the intent behind the action, then certainly it should be categorized as such.”

The deadline for introducing new legislation has already passed for this year, but Rasmussen hopes to raise enough awareness and get enough petitions signed to change the law next year. Rep. Tom Miles, a Democrat representing Forest and Morton, has recently stepped forward as the legislative sponsor.

“The idea that an individual would be attacked because of a disability is sickening. We need to make sure that people are punished who hurt a disabled person on purpose. I am sorry to say that it’s necessary, but it is,” says Miles.

Susan McPhail of Oxford is the mother of a young woman with autism. She says that her daughter has been the target of discrimination because of her disability.

“She’s seen by some, in my opinion, when they do that, as less of a person,” said McPhail.

Rasmussen says that Mississippi Citizens for Austin’s Law is looking for help. You can contact the group via Facebook or e-mail at austinslaw@hotmail.com or by phone (228) 324-4044.

Dees also urges people to do their own research and find for themselves what it is Mississippi Citizens for Austin’s Law is fighting for.

“It’s not just other children who are bullying and hating on disabled people, it’s adults as well.”

Senior Murphy Holloway posted 16 points and nine rebound and sophomore Jarvis Summers added 15 points and four assists as Ole Miss pulled away from Texas A&M 82-73 on Wednesday.

“The bottom line is we had enough offense,” Ole Miss coach Andy Kennedy said. “I thought we had a contribution from a number of guys. Marshall finally knocked down some shots in the second half and that allowed us to get the separation we needed.”

Ole Miss (21-7, 10-5 Southeastern Conference) earned another crucial win as it tries to solidify a case for the NCAA tournament. The Rebels are trying to break the SEC’s longest streak without an NCAA bid.

Holloway added nine rebounds and four assists and made 7 of 8 shots from the field. The Rebels have three regular-season games remaining.

“I’m just trying to grind and get these wins,” Holloway said.

Marshall Henderson hit five of his six 3-pointers in the second half to help the Rebels pull away after leading 37-31 at halftime. Jarvis Summers scored 15 points and Buckner added 12 points and three blocked shots.

Elston Turner led Texas A&M (16-12, 6-9) with 25 points. Turner had another good game against Ole Miss, hitting 10 of 17 shots from the field just two weeks after scoring 37 against the Rebels in a win at College Station. The son of former Ole Miss star Elston Turner Sr., the 6-foot-5 senior had 12 points in the first half alone to keep the game close.

“I call him Kobe (Bryant) ’cause he can make those shots,” Holloway said. “But it’s all love when we win.”

Texas A&M jumped out to an early 12-5 lead after a 3-pointer by Turner with 15:33 remaining, but Ole Miss fought back to eventually take a 37-31 halftime lead.

The Rebels got some good minutes early from their young and inexperienced bench. Anthony Perez had five points and Martavious Newby added three more in the first half, but Perez was hurt while going for a rebound in the second half and didn’t return.

Kennedy said he didn’t expect Perez’s injury to be season ending, but didn’t know how much time the lanky 6-foot-9 forward would miss.

Ole Miss slowly pulled away in the second half. Henderson and Summers hit back-to-back 3-pointers and then Nick Williams made a putback after a free throw to give the Rebels a 53-42 lead with 12:41 left.

Ole Miss led by as many as 18 in the second half. Texas A&M pulled within 76-67 with 1:44 left, but ran out of time to make a serious run.

Henderson didn’t have a great shooting night, making just 6 of 19 shots from the field, including 6 of 13 from 3-point range. But his good shots came during a crucial run that turned a tight game into a fairly easily win.

“Marshall got going and that was a big difference in the game,” Texas A&M coach Billy Kennedy said. “Our inability to handle the ball against the zone and make shots — you’ve got to give Ole Miss a lot of credit. They’re playing with a lot of confidence right now.”

Ole Miss shot 29 of 57 (50.9 percent) from the field. Texas A&M shot 30 of 56 (53.6 percent) from the field, but had 16 turnovers.

Fabyon Harris scored 17 points off the bench for the Aggies. Kourtney Roberson added 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Rebs Defeat Arkansas Pine Bluff

Brady Bramlett drew the start and pitched like his Ole Miss coaches wanted him to in the midweek. The freshman right-hander looked like a veteran in the Rebels’ 7-2 win against Arkansas-Pine Bluff Wednesday.

“Brady Bramlett was terrific in his first college start,” Ole Miss head coach Mike Bianco said. “That’s how you draw it up. Go out and pitch five innings with no walks and strike out seven.”

Bianco said it appeared it was all working for the Arlington High School (Tennessee) product.

“He really located his fast ball and slider. With a lot of right-handed hitters, he really kept them at bay,” Bianco said.

Bramlett, whose final line was no runs on two hits with seven strikeouts and a hit batter, said he knew on Tuesday he would start Wednesday.

“I was a little nervous,” said the 6-foot-4, 245-pounder. “Once I got out there I felt confident, just knowing the defense I had behind me.”

Bramlett, the winning pitcher, seemed to get stronger as the game went on, and he said that was indeed the case.

“I felt good throughout and good at the end,” he said. “I feel like the further I go, the stronger I get.”

Bianco said Bramlett went as long as they wanted him to, and he was pitching well when he left the game after five innings.

“He was fine and he just hadn’t thrown that many pitches since the last intrasquad game. So we didn’t want to push him too far to where he’s not able to pitch this weekend and comes down with a sore arm. He was terrific.”

It was a big third inning that proved enough for the Rebels as they scored four runs. An Austin Anderson triple scored Tanner Mathis who had singled. Auston Bousfield singled to score Anderson. Stuart Turner homered for the final two runs of the inning.

Austin Blount, Scott Ashford, and Aaron Greenwood also saw mound time for Ole Miss.

“Proud of the way we bounced back after a miserable game last night,” Bianco said. “The guys really responded.”

The Rebels, now 8-1, travel to Miami this weekend for three games against Florida International.
