Broadway musical whizzes into town for stream of performances

One of the great things about living in a college town is that we enjoy all the pluses of living in a small town while benefiting from the trickle-down effect of the arts from larger cities. This Thursday, February 28, at Fulton Chapel at Ole Miss, the trickling continues when Urinetown: The Musical brings a steady stream of Broadway entertainment to town. Performances are February 28 through March 2 at 7:30 p.m. and March 3 at 2 p.m.
Quoth The New York Times: “When every individual spirit as well as the national one can use all the bolstering it can get, Urinetown is not just a recommended tonic.”
The satirical comedy musical features music by Mark Hollmann, lyrics by Hollmann and Greg Kotis, and book by Kotis. It satirizes the legal system, capitalism, social irresponsibility, populism, bureaucracy, corporate mismanagement, and municipal politics. The show also parodies musicals such as The Cradle Will Rock and Les Misérables and the Broadway musical itself as a form. The characters of Bobby Strong and Hope Cladwell were both included on New York Theatre Monthly‘s list of “The 100 Greatest Roles in Musical Theatre.”
Here’s the plot nutshell: In an attempt to regulate water consumption, Urinetown has outlawed the use of private toilets. The citizenry must use public, pay-per-use amenities owned and operated by Urine Good Company, a malevolent corporation run by the corrupt Caldwell B. Cladwell.
Since its premiere, the show has become a popular choice for theaters throughout the world. Notable actors to play Bobby Strong include Patrick Dempsey, Gavin Creel, Hugh Jackman, John Gallagher Jr., Jonathan Groff and Darren Criss. Notable actresses to play Hope include Victoria Matlock, Rebecca Gibel, and Ramona Mallory.
This inventive show creates a strong urge to go. I can barely hold it.
