Ole Miss women’s basketball team captain Maggie McFerrin is one of 10 seniors at the University of Mississippi to be inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame, one of Ole Miss’ highest honors.

Provost Morris Stocks bestowed the honor Friday in a campus ceremony at the Ford Center for the Performing Arts, noting that the selection is based on a student’s academic achievement, community service, extracurricular activities and potential for future success. The Ole Miss Hall of Fame has recognized students with outstanding achievements since 1930.

McFerrin, an exercise science major with a 3.67 career GPA, she was listed on the 2011-12 SEC Academic Honor Roll and was UM’s 2010-11 Outstanding Scholar Athlete. She is a member of the Order of Omega interfraternal leadership honorary, Gamma Beta Phi academic and service honor society, and National Society of Collegiate Scholars. She is also a member of the SAAC.

“Well I’m just so shocked, I had no idea,” said McFerrin. “It’s a big honor, and it’s been a lot of hard work. My parents, coaches, and everybody else are to thank for helping me get through everything. I’m so thankful.”

McFerrin has participated in a number of community service events during her career at Ole Miss with several different organizations including Reading with Rebels, tornado relief with Lafayette county, Leap Frog, Food Pantry, a Cystic Fibrosis walk, Azalea Gardens, Habitat for Humanity, the Salvation Army and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

McFerrin, a 5-7 guard from Tupelo, Miss., is a three-year letterwinner on the women’s basketball team. During her career with the Rebels, McFerrin has played in 64 career games with 18 starts for Ole Miss. McFerrin is scheduled to graduate in May and is preparing to enroll in physical therapy school after graduation.
