Saint Peter’s Cemetery

Bluebirds still swoop through the old cedars, and deer and silver fox roam the ancient boxwoods. Quiet, except for the owls calling in the dark, and mourning doves crying at dawn. Beautiful, bucolic St. Peter’s Cemetery, a few blocks northeast of the Oxford Square, is full of ghosts: the final resting place of an American Revolutionary War hero, a Confederate general, a supreme court justice, Oxford’s yellow fever victims, a Hall of Fame football coach, writer Willie Morris’ beloved Labrador retriever, Pete, and Oxford’s most famous citizen, Nobel Laureate, William Faulkner … along with the ordinary men and women who built Oxford, Mississippi, through the years.
