One of a kind pieces of furniture are a specialty item not typically offered by traditional furniture retailers. But whether you need a small table or a chair or are looking to refurnish your entire house, custom designed furnishings are a niche and a specialty at the Green Door Company on North Lamar in Oxford.

Will and Missy Hopkins opened The Green Door Company in August of 2011 with a showroom floor of 12 thousand square feet. Every piece of furniture that they sell is individually made and crafted from reclaimed hardwood and repurposed timber.

With a green eye fixed on the environment as well as the customer’s budget, the timber used in each piece of furniture originates from wood taken from structures located in Mississippi Delta, meaning the timber is not cut down directly from wood forests.

Typically, customers will find dining room sets, accent end tables and an assortment of home furnishings ready to take home at The Green Door Company.

When customers come into the store looking for a specific item and the dimensions for a given space in their home, Hopkins says he is only too happy to flesh out the sketch in his woodshop and build the exact item the customer is wanting.

“During the whole build of the piece for a customer, Will stays in contact with them … so that the customer can feel like they have a finger print in the construction of their piece of furniture,” Missy said.

Throughout the year, Hopkins ends up building anywhere from 24 to 30 custom pieces for different customers. Last year, during football season, a customer came in wanting a custom sports cabinet with an old weathered look to it and a storage bottom compartment that featured an open top service area framed in glass. The tricky part for Hopkins was to place the glass in the framed top – - an area that was slimmer than the bottom portion of the cabinet.

Two months later, the customer picked up the sports cabinet that Hopkins hand crafted with detail. Hopkins said the customer was very pleased with the design and the detail. No project is too big a job for Hopkins, who estimates that most of the custom builds require only a week to complete, from start to finish.

The Green Door Company’s reputation is spreading fast. Customers are coming in from all over, having heard about the unique furniture they offer. When out-of-towners come in and seeing something they love, they can purchase the piece knowing that they are getting something for their home that no one else possesses.
