How many Baptist ministers have said they got religion in The Grove?

At least one, and he is Fletcher Law of Gainesville, Ga, who in 1979 was a angry and unsuccessful walk-on football player under Coach Steve Sloan.

Now Fletcher has authored a book Receiving Grace in the Grove which is available on-line through bookstores and Amazon.com. The book is a true story of Fletcher Law who left Ole Miss a fraternity boy without a degree and went to work for his family’s car dealership to face many family challenges.

“My future was secure, until my dad sold the dealership. At the same time, I lost the my first football game in three years of coaching youth football. My wife, Kay, and I decided to return to Ole Miss and pursue my dream of getting a degree and becoming a head high school football coach, “ Laws said.

After a dismal early academic career, Laws was admitted to the physical education degree program at Ole Miss in 1989. Coach Johnny Brewer gave him an assistantship, and they became good friends.

“Kay was pregnant with our son, Graham, and our lives were up and down, mostly up, with one problem after another. As problems arose in our personal lives, each was overcome by the grace of God and good people helping while we were at Ole Miss,’ he said “Coach Brewer was great, a special man in our lives”, Laws said, adding Coach Brewer wrote the preface to the book.

Today Laws has a degree from Ole Miss, a masters from the University of North Georgia and a Master of Divinity from the Candler School of Theology at Emory University. He is pastor of Good News At Noon ministry and Director of Ministries and Public Relations.

Good News At Noon was founded 25 years ago by Gene Beckstein and his late wife, Margie. The program now houses up to 18 men and feeds lunch to 75 people and supper to 125. Some 55 churches in the area support the ministry.

“The book tells of our life’s journey where we learned to trust in the Lord and his providential grace that guided our family to stay together, grow, and trust in the Lord and not our own plans,” he said.

Kay Law was a very popular teacher at Oxford-University School from 1988-90, while Fletcher was completing his degree at Ole Miss.

Receiving Grace In The Grove can be purchased on Kindle, on Amazon.com and from book stores for $12. Copies can be ordered for $18 from Fletcher Law, P. O. Box 402, Gainesville, GA, 30501. Each will be autographed by the author.

This fall Fletcher and Kay will return to campus where they celebrated their son, Graham’s first birthday in The Grove.

“Graham is named for the world renowned evangelist Billy Graham, Fletcher said.

“If I had another son, he would be named Brewer in honor of Coach Billy Brewer.”
